One tool that I have found to be very useful in optimizing my web pages for search engine rankings, has been the Overture Keyword Selector tool. This little online keyword selection application allows you to enter a keyword or phrase, and will return both an indication of the estimated number of times that term has been searched for, and a list of potentially related keywords or phrases and the number of times THEY have been searched for as well.
This is useful in both helping you to know whether a particular keyword or phrase is popular, as well as helping you to find other keywords or phrases that might be easier to target. You might see that a particular keyword has huge results in the keyword selector tool, but good luck getting first page search engine results for that word. Then you notice that there are five other phrases related to that same keyword, which would be much easier to target, and together would yield more results than the initial word you were aiming for.
